Daniel Ortega’s dictatorship accumulates 58 political hostages in less than 15 days

Human rights defenders demand that the Daniel Ortega regime stop the kidnappings and opponents in exile make massive complaints.n

Human rights defenders in Nicaragua are alarmed by the regime’s hunt down its critics. In the last 10 days, the dictatorship arrested and opened proceedings against 58 people, who were later sent home with the periodic signature precautionary measure.nnOn the night of this Saturday, May 13, agents of the regime’s police detained at least three opponents in different parts of the country, who were transferred to the Managua Courts for a hearing held in the early hours of this Sunday.

That day, the Catholics celebrated the 106th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin of Fatima in Portugal, a date that was used by Juan Carlos Marquez, a member of the Nicaraguan University Alliance (AUN), to post on his Instagram account, a photograph of an image of this Marian dedication that was placed on the altar of his parish.

Hours later, Marquez was kidnapped in the municipality of Nandaime, in the department of Granada. Alejandro Velez Brenes, a lawyer and notary public, in Managua, and Mrs. Yolanda González Escobar, the latter originally from the department of Masaya, were also detained.

Alarmed

“The wave of kidnappings and terror continues. Our people, our families, every Nicaraguan has the right to live in peace. It is a totally defenseless town,” denounced human rights defender Haydee Castillo.

The night of terror, one more unleashed by the regime against the opponents, caused the repudiation of youth leaders, who reproached the harassing actions of the Police. “What an ordeal we young Nicaraguans live through, today they kidnapped Juan Carlos el Márquez returning from mass. He is a member of AUN Nicaragua Enough of the persecution! Freedom for all political prisoners! Are held hostage

At the beginning of the month, on May 3, 2023, the Daniel Ortega regime imprisoned 55 opponents, including the Estelian journalist William Aragón.

Hours later, they were all released under a precautionary measure of daily periodic signing at the police stations in their municipalities. The citizens were accused of spreading false news on social networks.nnCurrently, the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega keeps more than 60 opponents imprisoned in the country’s prisons, denounced human rights organizations.
